| Description: | When Chiara Boschis took over her family estate, E. Pira & Figli, she became an important player in the modernization of Barolo, a member of the so-called "Barolo Boys" despite being the first female winemaker in the Langhe region of Piedmont. Indeed, her Barolos are the broad-shouldered wines known for ethereal aromas and fluid vinosity that seem to transcend a bracing structure of gripping tannins and vibrant veins of acidity; but she helped to create a style that's more common today, featuring more elegance and polish, a Barolo that one can enjoy while it still has youthful charm. In this case, a lot of that comes from extracting less intensely from the skins and aging in lightly toasted French oak, some of it new. The wonderful 2019 vintage, and how openly this Barolo from various sites reflects it, are what launch this to our #2 spot! The growing season was long and slow, allowing the development of a complex array of aromas and fine, sleek tannins, followed by a cooling off near the end that helped preserve those qualities, along with vibrant acidities. Upon tasting Chiara's wines, it's no surprise that she had been drawn to learn from some of the greats in Burgundy, the masters of elegance. In the spirit of both region's traditions, she considers herself to be a farmer first. Organically Farmed. Wine Advocate 97 Points - "The 2019 Barolo Via Nuova is a blend of fruit from various sites across multiple villages in the appellation. The wine is immediately open and beautiful, showing dark fruit, cherry, spice, blue flower and potting soils. The healthy fruit in this vintage shows an almost crunchy quality. With climate changes and weather patterns that are becoming increasingly tropical in nature, hail storms are a reoccurring threat. In recent times, they have been especially violent in the village of La Morra. Chiara Boschis installed hail nets in her vineyards seven years ago." |
