Angel Rodriguez Martinsancho Verdejo Rueda, Spain

Vintage: 2016
Description: Martinsancho Verdejo is a classic example of Rueda Verdejo. It was grown in an extremely old vineyard that was used to propagate many other vineyards that exist today. This wine is 100% Verdejo from 40-year old vines that were re-grafted from the original Martinsancho multi-century old stock. It is clear from this example why Verdejo is one Spain's noble grapes. In the mid-1900's Verdejo was almost extinct, but Angel Rodriguez, almost single handedly, brought it back to life. The fines for this wine are grown at high altitude on deep gravel alluvial soils. The climate here in Castile (Castilla y Leon) is harsh continental, enabling fruit to ripen very slowly and develop thick protective skins. Aromas are of ripe orchard fruit - pear, golden apple, white peach - melon, anise, snappy fresh herbs and minerals. A great alternative to Sauvignon Blanc or unoaked Chardonnay. Pair with lobster, seafood, chicken, asparagus and artichoke dishes.
