Chateau Mouton Rothschild

Chateau Mouton Rothschild

Cabernet Sauvignon 82%, Merlot 13%, Cabe from Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

Vintage: 1989
Winery: Chateau Mouton Rothschild
Description: Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1989 is in very good condition for the year. Mouton Rothschild has been under the Barons de Rothschild ownership for over 100 years, and it was the unremitting efforts of the flamboyant Baron Philippe de Rothschild that resulted in Mouton's historical upgrade to premier Grand cru status in 1973 – the only change ever made to the Bordeaux classification of 1855. Prior to the Médoc classification, Mouton's wine labels declared, Premier ne puis, Second ne daigne, Mouton suis ('First I cannot be, Second I do not deign to be, I am Mouton'). After the upgrade, the motto was changed to Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change ('First I am, second I was, Mouton does not change'). "Freshly picked blackberries turn into minty dark chocolate and oozing caramel with domineering eucalyptus on the nose. It becomes yet more complex on the palate thanks to layers upon layers of spices and sage plus fat and rounded tannins. There's a long finish with a bitter aftertaste, suggesting this could do with another 10 years or more of bottle aging. This is a Mouton I found massive at the time, then elegant and slightly austere years later, but today true to its former glory. Like the amazing 1947, it should not be forgotten." James Suckling.
