Winery: Domaine David-Beaupere
Description: Louis-Clément David took over the running of the family estate in 2008. After business school, he turned away from a career in finance to resume studies as an agricultural engineer at Isara. As soon as he arrived, he overturned the working methods in order to produce great natural wines, reflecting the uniqueness of the place. Domaine David-Beaupère now has 9 ha of vines, including 7 ha in Juliénas, the rest in Moulin-à-Vent and Beaujolais-Village. Les Juliénas are located on two renowned terroirs: La Bottière and Vayolette. The soil of La Bottière is sandy and loamy, the vines are between 40 and 70 years old. Vayolette is exposed to the south, on a steeply sloping ground whose soil is made up of blue stones (rock of magmatic origin). The vines have been organic since 2011 (first certification in 2014). To fight against the effects of heat waves, the soils are worked less and less in favor of natural or controlled grassing. In the cellar, vinification is carried out using indigenous yeasts, in whole bunches, in concrete vats. The wines are sulphited only at racking (10 mg/l), but not at bottling. The aging varies according to the cuvées, with the use of 400-litre barrels and demi-muids for the parcel cuvées. The wines are neither fined nor filtered. A pioneer of organic viticulture in Juliénas, Louis-Clément David is fully committed to promoting his terroirs. The wines of Domaine David-Beaupère combine depth, aromatic delicacy and aging potential.
