Description: | Notes
The spring of 2016 put us to the test. However, today, it is the exceptional quality of our two 2016 wines that go down in the property history. The winter was very mild and the vines were a week ahead of schedule. Their development was restrained as the weather was mild and wet, thus leading to the development of late mildew. 10mm of rain fell in just 1month! Never, since the property had become biodynamical, had we had felt such pressure.
However, thanks to the winemakers’ hard work and total dedication, we managed to stand up to the challenge. Luckily, the blossoming took place in optimal conditions over the week of June 6th. Summer finally came with moderate temperatures and no rain leading us to fear possible setback on the most sensitive soils. Fortunately, the rain came bringing joy to the whole team. The harvesting, which only began on October 3rd, was one of the most delayed in the property’s history. Although modest in quantity, the aromatic intensity of the grapes was extraordinary. The tannins were powerful and perfectly ripe, which led us to opt for sustained extraction. At the end of the first months of aging, the equilibrium of our two wines differed significantly from that of our previous great vintages: a classical degree of alcohol left pride of place to an exceptionally tannic
structure. The velvety texture of our Château Palmer wines is more than ever our hallmark.
BLEND - Merlot 40%, Cabernet Sauvignon 48%, Petit Verdot 12%
About Château Palmer Alter Ego
Spontaneity. That sudden desire to indulge without delay, Château Palmer wished to gratify. Thus, while remaining true to its philosophy, another expression of its terroir came to be. Since the 1998 vintage, a new approach to selection and blending has yielded this supple and rounded wine, distinguished by its freshness of fruit, crisp intensity and richness…from the moment out of barrel, it's all that’s natural, bottled.
The nature of Château Palmer. In the heart of the Margaux appellation, 66 hectares of gravelly soil and grassy rows overlooking the Gironde estuary. Between this earth rich in ancient history, and these heavenly skies with their nurturing microclimate, vines flourish under the care of men and women. One terroir, three grape varieties: such is the horizon of Château Palmer.
The terroir. Behind every great wine is a great terroir. Château Palmer’s has a natural logic: a long strip of land set between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde estuary. Behind the alluvial land of the palus sits the Brauzes plateau, the first gravelly terrace. This is well-drained land, rich with the deposits of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers, but washed clean of organic matter.
Difficult soil for agriculture, but exceptional for grape growing. Yet the vines still need help to fulfil their potential. So the men and women of Château Palmer carefully prune leaf and shoot to create a natural balance, channeling the plant's vitality towards something greater – producing the finest possible grapes. What more natural expression for an age-old vine, its roots reaching deep into difficult soils, guided by a sensitive hand? Such is a demanding terroir.
|
