Belje began in 1697 when Roman Emperor Leopold gifted the estate to Prince Eugene of Savoy. Today Belje is a leading winery in Croatia, specializing in the Graševina grape. The wine itself is beautifully fruity and flowery, fresh with crisp acidity that resembles citrus with the slightest hint of sweetness. The word I kept thinking of was "balanced," as it finishes with a beautiful orange peel note and nice bite, indicative of Graševina. This was definitely a pleasure to stumble across and is an exceptional food-friendly wine that is unfairly overlooked and underappreciated. |
