How the vines vigor is, the condition of the canopy and where our attention should be when it comes to picking. We are also blessed in that this vineyard is over 50 years old. The vines now have a natural balance anyway. Grown on old Axr Rootstock, this vineyard gives us flavors we only remember these days. Most vineyards were replanted to "clones" since 1990. Here - none. This vineyard is an old "mass selection" which gives us distinct subtropical and white peach aromas with a ton of mineral and graphite flavors in the mouth. Burgundy lovers complain that nobody now makes the creamy-rich style of ageworthy white Burgundy of the best producers in the 1950s or even 1970s. But I find this creamy rich yet stunningly mineral and complex throwback style of Russian River Chardonnay every bit as rare…and as thrilling. |
