Description: | Calatayud is a fairly innocuous and rural region of Spain. As far as the eye can see the hills and plains are blanketed by a patchwork of head-pruned Garnacha vineyards, olive and cherry orchards and fields of grain. Just to the north of Calatayud is Campo de Borja, Navarra and Rioja Baja, so this sea of Garnacha is a small part of a wider ocean. Much of the inexpensive and pleasurable Garnacha sold in the Us comes from these regions in Spain and Eric Solomon was an early pioneer and proponent. Evodia fits right in the mix-- it's a 100% Garnacha wine, from old vines, that drinks like a much pricier bottling. This juice is good!!! The nose is rich and lovely with scents of red fruits and berries (think raspberries, cherries and redcurrant) with depth and dimension from notes of garrique, peppercorn, rose garden and forest floor. The palate reiterates and adds to the fruit found in the nose. Red berries are the main elements, cherries and raspberries, with support from notes of Boysenberry and plum. Add a dollop of earthiness and spice and this wine just sings. The fruit is kept in harmonious balance as soft tannins and light acidity make for nice structure. Evodia is sourced from Garnacha from the villages of Atea, Acered and Alarba. Located in the Sierra Santa Cruz, these steep sites ( up to 25% ) have various exposures but share similar soils - slate and quartzite over clay. At an average elevation of 900 meters above sea level, these vineyards are among the highest sites within the province of Aragon. This unique terroir and the old vines of Garnacha rooted in it, are the origins of Evodia. This is the kind of red wine we really enjoy during warmer weather-- it has impeccable balance and won't slow you down in the heat yet pairs perfectly with favorites from the grill (from burgers to ribs, rustic sausage pizza to carnitas). Jeb Dunnuck 93 Points - "Based on 100% Garnacha, the 2019 Evodia is a killer value that delivers incredible Garnacha flair at a crazy good price. Kirsch, blackberry, acacia flower, violet, and sandalwood notes give way to a medium to full-bodied, seamless, beautifully layered wine with fabulous tannins, no hard edges, and a great, great finish. This is the finest wine at this price point in the world." |
