Bucciarelli Chianti Classico Antica Podere Casanova
Vintage: | 2016 |

Description: | Organically Farmed. 100% Sangiovese. Podere Casanova is an old estate, once owned by artist Michelangelo Buonarotti to supply his place in Florence with wine. In the 1920s the Bucciarelli family became sharecroppers on the land, and when the practice was phased out, they were able to purchase the estate in 1982. They make traditional wines in the eastern part of Castellina, looking toward the Chianti Mountains. While wines from this area are known for their medium weight and lean -but firm- structures, Bucciarelli has always shown a touch more opulence to the mineral-tinged fruit. It's a rustic, traditionally-styled Chianti Classico that reflects the character of the vintage; but with the perfect amount of bottle age, it's sleek with subtle, well-integrated flavors. Aged in 900-2000l Slavonian and Tuscan oak casks for 2 years. "Made with organically farmed Sangiovese, this has earthy aromas of cedar, violet and scorched earth. The taut palate offers ripe blackberry, tangerine zest and sage alongside tightly knit tannins." - Wine Enthusiast. "On June 18 of 1549, Michelangelo Buonarroti, known best for his sculpture of David and painting the Sistine Chapel, acquired Podere Casanova in Castellina in Chianti. Further records indicate that wine from this estate was sent to the renaissance man's Florence residence in 1551. The estate remained in the hands of the Buonarroti family until 1863. Fast forward to 1926, following some ups and downs, the Bucciarelli family of sharecroppers settled on the property, tending to its vines, olive groves, and cultivating cereals. With the agrarian reform, the Bucciarelli family finally purchased the estate in 1982, and since 1986 has been bottling Chianti Classico according to their own vision: 100% Sangiovese, limited production, certified organic, spontaneous fermentation and aging in cement and cask. An aura of mystery surrounds these wines: we found them deeply transporting and utterly transfixing. Enticed again and again for another taste, their aromatics beguiled us as layers of complexity enveloped our palates and left us thinking that Michelangelo had indeed made a good investment!" - Skurnik |
