| Description: | Conterno Fantino is a well-known Barolo producer in the Monforte d'Alba area, making stylish, modern expressions of the region's traditional reds. The vines for "Vignota" grow on steep, south-facing slopes in calcareous soils, vital to making this a "next level" wine. It shows off the sheer drinkability and food-pairing flexibility that Barbera can have, with its supple fruit texture driven by a spine of bright, mouthwatering acidity, and just a light grip of powdery, fine tannin. It's stylish in its expression of fruit, oak, and polish, but never pushing outside the lines, with a feeling of sleekness and precision on the palate. Aromas of fresh violet, a soft woodsy quality, and a hint of musk accompany the dark fruit (blackberry) core. On the palate it's soft and fluid, finishing juicy rather than austere. Here, fresh mint and an inner natural sweetness of oak reverberate amongst a wash of tanginess and an almost saline minerality. A wood-fired pizza or a baked pasta dish would make easy partners!
