Description: | The Guntrum familys love affair with wine began ove r three centuries ago in Rheinhessen, Germany. They planted their first vineyard in 1648 and by 1789 moved their production facility to Bergstrasse in southern Hesse. Their tenure was interrupted by the French Revolution ‒ the family fled to nearby Bensheim but in 1909 Louis Guntrum returned to Nierstein and founded this eponymous estate. Winemaking operations paused again in February 1945 when U.S. General George Patton commandeered the winery and the family mansion. Today Louis Konstantin Guntrum, the 11th generation of this winemaking family, owns and manages the property with the help of winemaker Kim Kirchhoff. The vineyards and cellars are located between two small villages ‒ Nierstein and Oppenheim and Louis produces wines from estate and sourced fruit. The familys holdings span 27 acres and include Schutzenhutte, a tiny monopole in Oppenheim, a parcel in the renowned Niersteiner Olberg and vineyards in Niersteiner Pettenthal and Oppenheimer Sacktrager. Riesling, Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Spatburgunder (Pinot Noir), Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris), Silvaner, Gewurztraminer and Muller-Thurgau are planted on the red slate of Nierstein and the chalky loams of Oppenheim. Farming methods at the estate have been certified sustainable by the German Agricultural Society (dlg). |
