From Umbria IGT
Vintage: | 2009 |

Description: | 96 Wa / 93 Wro / 93 Fs. The precious 2009 Muffato della Sala (Sauvignon Blanc, Grechetto, Semillon, Traminer and Riesling) is stunning on all levels. Aromas of candied fruit, caramel, honey and marzipan burst from the glass. The mouthfeel is viscous, rich and syrupy – but there's enough acidity to keep it from feeling heavy or fat. The hot 2009 vintage has shaped a spectacular Muffato. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2030. Marchesi Antinori's estate in Umbria is a revolutionary force for the region. The amazingly successful Cervaro della Sala has arguably done more to raise the image of Italian white wine than any other single bottle. Winemaker Renzo Cotarella grew up near Castello della Sala and enjoys a deeply personal relationship to this estate. Drink: 2014 – 2030. Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate This wine's name, Muffato, indicates that is has been affected by Botrytis cinerea called Muffa nobile in Italian. This is the fungus that gives us the great wines of Sauternes from France and Tokaji Aszú from Hungary. Sauvignon Blanc contributes 60 percent of the blend with Grechetto, Gewürztraminer, Semillon, and Riesling adding their aromatic charms. The grapes are picked in several passes through the vineyard to ensure that the grapes are affected by the Muffa nobile. The result is complex, layered aromas and enhanced flavors of candied peach, melon with savory, toasty notes. The wine is sweet, yet beautifully balanced with vibrant acidity. It is a luscious finale after dinner, or a pleasurable partner with a perfectly ripe gorgonzola.-Rebecca Murphy, Wine Review Online |
