Once these special casks have been identified, they are moved to the very top of the the distillerys rickhouses, where extreme temperature changes facilitate dramatic interactions between the whiskey and the wood by law, Tennessee whiskey must be aged new new, charred American oak barrels). Finally, each barrel is bottled individually at 94 proof, resulting in truly one-of-a-kind flavors in every bottle. Jack Daniels Single Barrel Select Tennessee Whiskey has a cherry wood color and classic aroma of vanilla, caramel, brown sugar and even some cinnamon. On the palate, notes of oak and charcoal become evident, along with sweeter touches of orange peel and honey. The finish is sweet and spicy, with flavors of butterscotch and clove lingering on the tongue. Fletcher, the grandson of Frank Bobo, a former Jack Daniel's master distiller, casts the release in terms of whiskey purity in the face of what he calls some "outlandish offerings" from other distillers in the interest of enlarging their portfolios. "It's the simplification of being able to sample, to literally sample, a barrel and not only have it be a barrel-strength product, but also a true single-barrel product with each barrel providing a different experience from proof-content to flavor-content as well."Cask strength typically reflects more than just more alcohol. In the straight whiskey world, more proof usually means more flavor and it certainly proves true with this dram. The whiskey is aged in the upper regions of their barrel house where its exposed to the increased temperature variation. The Single Barrel Rye is at least 4 years old based on the lack of age statement on its label, although the company hasnt officially called it as such. |
