Mmmm...Cupcakes!
It all started with an unexpected desire for chocolate cake. We were in the middle of Santa Barbara wine country, in a small touristy town geared, naturally, toward the wine aficionado. There were wine bars and tastings aplenty in Los Olivos, but apart from the exceptionally large cookies offered at Panino, we found little in the way of dessert.
Just when we were about to drop into the final stage of serious chocolate deprivation, we found Patrick, chef and owner, standing in front of his 'Shut' Side Street Cafe. We were disappointed thinking we may have failed in our quest, but Patrick directed us to a new place down the street where he said we'd find what we were searching for.
We entered the building and headed towards the cupcakes, which turned out to be either showcased behind glass or in the hands of innocent, unsuspecting customers who had no idea we'd be after their delicious cupcakes. Fortunately, we showed proper restraint and waited our turn as Kevin Vander Vliet went through the lineup of cupcake flavors.
We chose our cupcakes carefully based both on cupcake description and aesthetic quality. The Strawberries & Cream was absolutely fantastic. The second cupcake, Chocolate Blackberry Syrah, filled with gooey chocolate, and topped with a blackberry, was more appropriate for our wine-themed weekend in Los Olivos and equally wonderful.
The cupcakes were affordable - at least as far as gourmet cupcakes go. The regular size ones were $3.25. The miniature cupcakes were $2.00.
Our quest fulfilled by the Vander Vliet family and taste buds equally satisfied, we made our way out and took note - this was a place to return to.
