Hartmann Dona Granit Schiava

Vintage: 2020
Description: Schiava (aka Vernatsch) makes medium-light to medium-bodied wines that are relatively pale in color, but capable of concentrated flavors. You can expect cool-climate red fruits like strawberry and raspberry, candied flowers, accented with lemon (and its fresh acidity) and a smoky minerality. Hartmann Dona makes bottlings from different dominant soil types, this one from granite. Fermented and aged in traditional, large barrels. Give this one 30 minutes in the glass to open up. "The steep vineyard for the Granit of the Liquid Stone line is one of the few areas in South Tyrol whose soil consists mostly of hard granite. It is located at the entrance to Ultimo Valley, above Lana in in the small village Gegend in the southwest of South Tyrol. The vineyard emerges 500 metres above sea level, facing south. Hence, despite the rather breezy and cool climate due to the winds of the Adige and Ultimo Valleys, the vines receive enough warm sunshine. The Granit shows us how versatile the Schiava is and presents its outstanding features: structure and tannin. The Schiava vines are 35 years old and densely planted with 5000 vines/hectare." - Winery Notes. "One who is igniting Schiavas full potential is Hartmann Don, a stern-looking man with a fascination for the variety bordering on insanity. Last year Don released three single-vineyard Schiavas grown on radically different soil types: Phyllit from gneiss, Dolomit from calcareous sediments; and Granit grown on soils of volcanic origin. Rarely have I been more excited about red wines from Alto Adige. Vinified in pretty much the same way, while stylistically completely different, they are crystal-clear expressions of Alto Adiges complex terroirs. These three exceptional, elegant and, I expect, long-lived wines should prove a total game-changer in the appreciation of Schiava, showing convincingly its ability to express differences in terroir.
