One day, so the story goes, agonizing over a particularly tricky scene, Shakespeare heard the roar of the bear and had an epiphany. "I know what to do!" he exclaimed. "We must put that beast on the boards!" "Impossible!" cried mamagement. But Will put his foot down, and thus, the unforgettable stage direction, "exit, pursued by a bear" came to be. |
