Description: | Malbec has found a welcoming home in Argentina. The variety traces its roots to France, where it traditionally has been used as a minor but important ingredient in the fine red blends of Bordeaux. But in Argentina — particularly in the Mendoza and San Juan growing regions — it has emerged as a star in its own right. Mendoza and San Juan account for more than 90 percent of Argentina's wine production. Soils are calcareous, but a lack of organic matter restricts vigorous vine growth. Annual rainfall is less than 8 inches, but abundant snow in the mountains allows for irrigation when required. Such conditions are ideal for the production of high-quality wine. "High quality" is a great way to describe the 2012 Malbec from Andes Peak, a nicely concentrated wine that serves double duty as a sublime sipping wine and a versatile companion to food. It will be a most welcome addition to your home. |
