Morgan Chardonnay Highlands

Morgan Chardonnay Highlands

From Santa Lucia Highlands Country: USA - Cal

Vintage: 2012
Description: "a crisp, flinty style, with citrus-infused green apple and pear flavors that are pure and persistent. Drink now. 7,995 cases made. -jl" (ws). "The 2012 Chardonnay Highland Santa Lucia Highlands is a barrel-fermented effort that saw 25% new French oak. It exhibits classy peach, pineapple and apple-tart qualities that flow nicely to medium-bodied, crisp and focused feel on the palate. It represents a rock-solid value and will drink nicely for 2-3 years. Created in 1982 by Dan Lee (Dan's middle name is Morgan), this estate produces a bevy of solid wines, all of which lean to the more fresh, focused end of the spectrum. The Double L Vineyard (which stands for Double Luck and named so after the birth of twins) is the estate vineyards and it lies in the cooler, more northern end of appellation. Dan commented that the 2012 vintage was a glorious vintage that had no problems or rains, and was an easy vintage to make good wines." (wa). "It would be easy enough to mistake this bottling for a far more expensive wine than it is. It is built on a very solid foundation of youthful, sure-footed fruit with plenty of well-measured oak in support. It is fleshy and fairly full with terrific palatal length, but it is also still a bit tight and far from fully expressed. There is no doubt in our minds that it will age famously, and it deserves at least a year or two of patience in which to fill out and deepen as it grows into its best. Reviewed: May 2014" (cg). "The smell of tart green apple frying in butter introduces this bottling from Dan Lee's historic winery. On the palate, lemon-lime spritzer and pear flow into a saline minerality in the midpalate, with acidic tartness emerging on the finish. This is a very tight and focused Chardonnay. -m.k. (9/1/2014)" (we). "The 2012 Chardonnay Highland is open, expressive and quite pretty. Lemon, pastry, white flowers and mint all meld together in an attractive cool-climate Chardonnay that emphasizes bright, citrus overtones rather than the more tropical notes that are typical of Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnays." (ag). Winery Notes:. The Grape:. Chardonnay, the most popular white wine varietal. A noble grape, originally from Burgundy, now with its world-class reputation firmly established in the best coastal regions of the New World. The Place:. The Santa Lucia Highlands - Monterey Bay's cool ocean breezes lead to gentle ripening in the foothills looking over the Salinas Valley. Perfect conditions for growing award-winning Chardonnay. The Wine:. With each vintage of Highland Chardonnay we showcase the unique attributes of our Double L Vineyard and the Santa Lucia Highlands Ava. The 2012 cuvee includes 71% fruit from the Double L and the balance from outstanding neighboring estates in the Slh, including Lucia Highlands, McIntryre, and Tondre. The Double L Vineyard has been "Certified Organic" since 2002 but has been conscientiously farmed in this method since the original plantings in 1997. After back to back years of below normal temperatures, 2012 was a "textbook" growing season, with seasonal temperatures and more predictable weather patterns. The Chardonnay vines seemed to sense the change, providing a slightly larger crop with very focused aromas and flavors. The grapes are hand picked and sorted in the vineyard. Whole cluster pressing preserves the fruit flavors and natural acidity. We barrel ferment the wine in 23% new French oak along with a combination of one and two year old and neutral barrels. Partial malo-lactic fermentation ensures the wine will have a creamy richness balanced by bright fruit acidity. This focused, elegant Chardonnay's aromas feature creme brulee, green apple & floral. On the palate, the rich flavors are complemented by a light touch of toasty oak and refreshing citrus with bright acidity. Incredibly food-friendly, the 2012 Highland Chardonnay is a perfect match with cream-sauced pastas, roast chicken and pork, and seafood.
