Landmark Syrah Steel Plow Kivelstadt Vineyard
Syrah from California
| Vintage: | 2006 |
| Description: | Steel Plow Syrah is a realtively new wine for Landmark Vineyards. Our Syrah program is only three years old with grapes sourced entirely from the El Farolito Vineyard on the northeast side of Sonoma Mountain. There are four different clones of Syrah in the organically farmed vineyard including selections from the Alban and Durell vineyards, which are some of the syrah pioneers in California. The site is nestled into a southern-facing bowl with well-drained rocky soil that limits syrah's tendency for large crops. The relatively cool climate contributes to the elegant dark fruit character of the wine. Each load of hand-harvested fruit is sorted before destemming and fermentation in open-topped fermenters. After pressing out, the wine is aged in French oak, 40% new and the balance one and two-year-old. A racking in the spring and again in the fall, following the next vintage’s harvest, is the only ”wine-making” that takes place. Syrah tends to evolve slowly, and long-ageing potential is evidenced by the marked improvement the wine shows after a couple of days in a partially consumed bottle. Dark plum, peach and black raspberry fruit mingle with roasted coffee bean, chamois and vanilla,in the complex flavor and aroma profile of this intense wine. It will continue to evolve in the bottle for many years to come. The ultra fine tannin structure, fruit and acidity of the Syrah will enhance hearty braised meats and roasts. |
