Jordanov Rkaciteli Tikves Macedonia

Jordanov Rkaciteli Tikves Macedonia

Vintage: 2013
Description: Finding good, inexpensive, crisp whites is getting increasingly difficult. Finding something with distinctive character is even harder. This 2013 Jordanov Rkaciteli (ar-kot-see-TELL-ee) has it all: A distinctive, well-made, character-filled wine that doesn't cost a lot of money. This comes from a place that isn't widely known in the in the U.s., even though wine has been produced there since roughly 2800 B.c. Actually, Rkaciteli is one of the most widely-grown grapes in the world, though mostly in eastern Europe and Georgia (the country, not the state). Due to its thicker skin, which is more resistant to cold, it makes for a wine that has a dense, expressive fruit component, but zippy underlying acidity (similar in demeanor to a Gruner Veltliner or Muscadet) when farmed properly. The Jordanovs are of significant means (the importer says they are the wealthiest folks in Macedonia), and take their wine seriously. In addition to doing what is necessary in the vineyard, they have a state of the art collection of winery hardware. This enables them to keep the juice temperature controlled throughout the winemaking process, and preserve the sizzling acidity and fresh aromatics. Apparently they don't feel the need to charge big bucks for their wine either, making it a pretty screaming deal in the value white wine category. What does Rkaciteli taste like? As we mentioned above, the most workable description would be that it is similar in demeanor to a Muscadet or a Gruner Veltliner. The nose shows melon and white stone fruits along with some florality. In the mouth it is round, ample, and insistent up-front, sporting about 14% alcohol, with the fruit flavors joined by a little stoney minerality. This version is dry and crisp, supported (but not dominated) by some zingy, mouth-watering acidity. It's strangely familiar, yet ultimately distinctive and different. It's also bright and tasty, and delivers far beyond the modest fare. Tired of the same old thing? Got Rkaciteli?.
