Azienda Agricola Arianna Occhipinti Frappato

Vintage: 2021
Description: Occhipinti is a small winery with a big following, so we're usually only allocated a few cases of their wines each year. But many restaurants had to pass on their allotments due to the pandemic, so we just got in a little extra of their very popular Frappato. It's just in time, because this is a great wine for Spring!. Arianna Occhipinti has been one of the stars of the modern-day Italian wine scene for her minimalist winemaking philosophy, and the quality to back it up. Some might call these 'natural' wines, but for her the term is loaded with complications and misconceptions; to her these are simply 'wines of place.' That place is Vittoria, the southern region of Sicily where she grew up. For her, a wine that reflects its origins is made in a way that allows the area's biodiversity to flourish, unless it directly threatens the health of the vines. That starts with farming organically, though she takes it further, making use of biodynamic techniques, which some winemakers feel is more in harmony with nature. She allows the juice to start fermentation on its own, allowing the wild yeasts to create their flavors, though her small additions of sulfites protect the wine from going completely off the rails. Aging takes place in a mix of concrete and older large oak barrels to avoid adding too many flavors that are not from the grapes. For Adrianna, the wine that perhaps most represents her vision of a Vittoria territory wine is her Frappato. In her hands, this vibrant, easy-going variety has a wilder character, with a savory edge to the fruit. Medium-light in weight, the wine is driven by a combination of fruits like macerated sour cherry, pomegranate, and Damson plum along with floral and forest floor qualities, accompanied by subtler notes like white pepper, black tea leaves, and iron. In 2019 the grapes were able to develop with some serious, lightly grippy tannins and more juice concentration than average, providing enough depth for the complex array of flavors to play out. This is a highly drinkable red that cries out for well-seared or cured meats and quick, vibrant & savory tomato sauces like Amatriciana.
