Our Sivas-Sonoma 2011 Old Vine Zinfandel is densely packed and vibrant with a captivating peppery lift to the intense dark fruit flavors. It has a lush, sweet bouquet of brambly blackberry and fig compote, coupled with earthy notes of warm cinnamon and white pepper. Richly tannic and soft with deep, sweet flavors of currants, nutmeg and black tea. The American oak is finely integrated with its ripe fruit character, providing both structure and an elegant balance to this big Zinfandel. Try pairing this wine with barbecue tri-tip, a charcuterie plate or fresh carne asada tacos. Appellation:. Sonoma County has a rich winemaking pedigree stretching back to the early 1800's. With over 60,000 acres of vineyards and over 450 bonded wineries it has assumed a prominent place among California's premier grape growing regions. The broader Sonoma County Ava includes some 16 sub-appellations each with their own unique microclimates and varietal specialties. Sonoma County is well-known for the diversity of vines that thrive there. The majority of the grapes used in creating our 2011 Sivas-Sonoma Old Vine Zinfandel are from the Sonoma Valley. This area is known for the cooling breezes that come from the north and south, this allows the grapes to develop full flavor maturity over an extended growing season while retaining their all-important natural acidity. Other sub-appellations-namely the Russian River Valley, Knights Valley, and Alexander Valley-play supporting roles here, seamlessly blending to showcase the depth and diversity of this world-class growing region. Vintage:. The 2011 growing season got off to a late start due to an unusually wet and cool spring. Temperatures throughout the summer were cool, rarely rising above 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Finally in mid-September temperatures reached the mid-90's for a week or so which was just what the winemakers needed. Due to the weather, crop yields were generally smaller than usual, ironically this allowed for faster ripening and more concentrated fruit flavors. The small harvest of 2011 affected every wine region in Northern California, our 2011 Sivas-Sonoma Old Vine Zinfandel was no exception. It was a challenge to find grapes whose quality reflected our previous vintages, so we had to reach out to the surrounding smaller growers and find fruit that showcased the vibrancy and intensity that we had become accustomed to. This is what made the 2011 vintage so special, a "true sum of parts" as winemaker Greg Kitchens described it. Our Philosophy:.
